About
MTW Ukraine
As
the Lord enables, a Ukrainian led church planting movement of the Evangelical
Presbyterian Church of Ukraine (EPCU) and other Reformed bodies will be
established in Ukraine
that will be used as a base for ministry to other Russian speaking countries
and the world.
Brief History:
MTW has been working in Ukraine since 1993, when it began sending teams
through CoMission, an interdenominational wave of missions to the former USSR. The first two CoMission/MTW teams were sent
out in 1993, and between 1994 and 1997, 12 CoMission teams were sent by MTW to
the southern cities of Odessa, Belgorod-Dnistrovsky,
Kherson,
Nikolaev and Izmail. Soon after the
CoMission teams began to be sent out, MTW also began recruiting church planters
to work on establishing churches in these cities. Churches continue to grow in all of these
cities, and two church plants have been started, one in Odessa
and one in Kherson. The first church begun in Odessa, Evangelical Presbyterian Church of
Odessa, was particularized (became self-governing) in 2001.
In 1997, MTW was asked to
join in the development of an already established church in the capital city of
Kiev. This church, Presbyterian Church of the Holy
Trinity, has also been particularized and is the largest of our churches, having attendance
of around 500 each week. Two additional church plants have also been
started in Kiev
– one in 2002 and one in 2003.
The first Ukrainian national Church Planting
Team was sent to Kharkov
in 1999 after an invitation came from a group of believers interested in the
Reformed faith. This church continues to
be a part of the EPCU, with some missionary oversight from the MTW team and the
Presbytery.
As the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of
Ukraine (EPCU) continues to grow and mature, new church plants are
planned. Currently there are groups
gathering in Zaporozhe and Cherkassy as well as a missionary team
preparing to plant a church in L’viv.
MTW Ukraine Ministry Priorities:
Church Planting & Development – partnering with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of
Ukraine (EPCU) as needed in various church plants to assist in evangelism,
discipleship, mentoring, and leadership development. Our focus will continue to be:
Equipping and Coaching
Opening new ministry sites
Assisting in ongoing church
development (towards maturity)
Encouraging and helping to
facilitate a missions movement from Ukraine
